Helmet Camera

The DJI Osmo Action 4 Adventure Combo is my favorite action camera on the market. 4k quality and dual touch screens make this little powerhouse easy to use. The Adventure Combo kit includes 3 batteries, a charging case and an extendable selfie stick.

I use the Dango Design Gripper Mount  to attach the action camera to my helmet. I attach the microphone to this mount so that it is positioned on the part that would clamp in front of my mouth when it is attached to my helmet. This way the microphone is always attached to this mount (not attached to the inside of my helmet) which means that the microphone stays with this mount when I remove it from my helmet or put it on another helmet. I no longer have cables wired directly into my helmet, the microphone stays on the Grripper mount.

I put a Rycote Micro WJ Micro Wind Jammer on top of the microphone that is attached to the Gripper mount to help prevent wind noise. I also make sure to close any vents and my visor when I am recording audio/talking inside of the helmet.

I plug my TRS helmet mic cable into this BOYA BY-K4 USB-C Adapter and then plug the USB-C end of this adapter into the Osmo Action 4 camera to get audio from my helmet mic into the camera.

I use this Saramonic Right-Angle USB-C Adapter on the DJI Osmo Action camera so that the mic cable is positioned downward instead of sticking out to the side which could prevent damage to the cable.

The DJI Wireless Mic  pairs well with the Osmo Action 3 camera and also plays nice with my larger mirrorless camera setup. I use these with the wind muffs (included) when I want to record crisp clear audio when the subject is further away from the camera.

I attach this BOYA USB-C Microphone BY-M100UC to the DJI Osmo Action 3 when I want to go handheld and record higher quality sound without wind noise. I put a separate wind muff over the mic to prevent wind noise.

The Falcam F22 Quick Release series of connectors are very useful and well-built. I use them in various places for my action camera and other pieces of gear.

The Manfrotto Mini Tripod is my everyday mini-tripod that I use for both my larger mirrorless camera and also the action cameras.

I use the GoPro Shorty Mini Extension Pole Tripod as a short selfie stick and mini tripod. Useful, light and compact.

The GoPro Light Mod is a simple, useful little light when I want to have additional illumination on my subject.

I use a GoPro Chest Mount all of the time to get interesting POV shots when my hands need to be free to do other things – setting up camp, cooking, etc.

I use the Telesin Magnet POV Neck Mount to get additional hands-free footage. This is easier to attach and unattach around my neck than the chest mount (above) but not quite as stable.
