Steak & Lobster Surprise in Baja

Eva and I are on the second week of a two-week motorcycle travel adventure in Baja Mexico that started at The Jonquil Motel in Bisbee, Arizona. We had no idea that our first day of this unplanned adventure would lead to a steak and lobster surprise in Baja at Coyote Cal’s on the Pacific Ocean.

Crossing the US/Mexico Border in Tecate

Crossing border into Tecate Mexico

After a windy morning at the Corral Canyon Campground in California we crossed the US/Mexico border in Tecate. Despite the windy conditions we had a great first day of riding in Baja Mexico. We traveled through the wine region stopping to make phone calls and connect with the rest of the world before making it to the Pacific Ocean at Ensenada.

Riding Out to Coyote Cal’s

We had our first great meal in Baja at a small restaurant along the main highway heading south before looking for a road out to the Pacific Ocean. The map indicated that there was a road near St. Tomas, which appeared to connect back to the main highway further south. We ended up getting on this road at the southern point and began looping north to the ocean.

We had no idea where we were going to spend the night but it wasn’t long before we found a place. Coyote Cal’s is a coastal destination for the motorcycle crowd in Baja and indeed there were several off road motorcyclists there. They were in the mood to celebrate, or should I say that they were already celebrating.

We were invited to join them and proceeded to have quite a few beers and some tequila before having a plate of steak and lobster at the onsite restaurant. The meal was undeservedly good and we went to bed in the late hours of the evening having successfully concluded our first day in Baja Mexico.

Unexpected Surprise

Then lesson here is that you can have an amazing motorcycle travel adventure in Baja Mexico without having everything planned in advance. When we crossed the border in the morning we didn’t know where we would be sleeping that night or that we would have a steak and lobster surprise in Baja at Coyote Cal’s.
